How to be a Designated Donor
There are several ways to inform your family, friends and healthcare providers of your intention to be a donor. Initiate a conversation about donation with your loved ones, designate donation through the Iowa Donor Registry and/or mark "yes" to being a donor on your Iowa driver’s license.
Become a Registered Donor
The Iowa Donor Registry is available to all residents of Iowa. Iowans may register on-line at IowaDonorRegistry.org , via a toll free phone number (1.877.366.6742) or by brochure to give the gift of life, the gift of sight, and/or the gift of answers through research. Recent legislation passed in Iowa, including First Person Consent Law and the Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, allows an individual to legally record their decision to be a donor and verifies that this decision will be honored at the time of their death. The Iowa Donor Registry is the secure database maintained by Iowa Donor Network, permitting an individual to register their legal consent to making an anatomical gift.
Iowa Driver's License
When you apply for or renew your Iowa driver’s license or state ID card, you will be asked a question regarding your donor designation. This decision will guide your family or healthcare providers toward donation at the time of your death. Answering “yes” to the donor question on your driver’s license is your legal consent for organ, tissue and eye donation for transplant only. To ensure that all of your donation wishes will be carried out, as in the case of research consent, you must register with the Iowa Donor Registry.
